Can stem cells be used to treat stroke? Ischemic stroke remains a leading cause of death and disability throughout the world. Adjuvant therapies that can be used beyond the restrictive time windows of IV tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) or mechanical thrombectomy are desperately needed in order to prevent death or life-long disability.
